FAQs About Gum Grafting

Loss of gum tissue can cause sensitivity to heat and cold and may increase your risk of tooth loss. Gum grafts are used to treat the problem and restore the health of your gums. Ryan J. Donovan, DMD, MS, PA, who performs gum grafting in Fort Myers, shares some Gumsinformation about the procedure.

What causes receding gums?

Receding gums can occur for several reasons, including:

  • Brushing your teeth too hard
  • Hormonal changes in women during puberty, pregnancy or menopause
  • Gum disease
  • Gum injury
  • Poor oral hygiene
  • Smoking
  • Grinding your teeth
  • Tongue and lip piercings that rub against the gums
  • Heredity (Receding gums run in some families.)
  • Diabetes or other illnesses

Why is it important to treat receding gums?

Receding gums make your teeth look longer and change your smile, but concerns about appearance aren't the only reason that dentists recommend gum grafting. Exposed roots are more prone to developing tooth decay and are sensitive to hot and cold temperatures. If your problem is caused by gum disease, failing to treat the issue can lead to tooth loss.

What happens during gum grafting?

Your periodontist will remove a piece of tissue from the roof of your mouth or from the area next to the tooth. In some cases, he may suggest using donor tissue instead. Your periodontist sews this tiny piece of tissue, called a graft, to your gum line.

Is the recovery process painful?

If your periodontist removed gum tissue from your mouth to create the graft, you might notice some slight pain in the days following the procedure. The pain is often compared to the same amount of pain you would experience if you burned the roof of your mouth on a hot piece of pizza. Over-the-counter medication can be helpful in relieving any pain you may experience. If your periodontist used a donor graft, you probably won't notice any pain.

After the gum grafting procedure, you will need to eat soft foods for one or two weeks while you heal. Although you can brush your teeth, you must avoid flossing or brushing near the graft until your periodontist gives his approval.
